Teaching ESL/EFL Reading

This course will provide practical techniques and methods for teaching reading in any ESL or EFL environment. It will guide you through key issues related to the successful teaching of reading, such as the role of reading within an ESL or EFL curriculum and detailed classroom teaching techniques. It will also provide practical ways that you can become a more effective teacher of reading.

This course includes a knowledgeable and caring instructor who will guide you through your lessons, facilitate discussions, and answer your questions.

Dr. Neil Anderson is currently a professor in the Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University. Prior to this he was a professor in the Department of Linguistics at Ohio University. He earned his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin. He was the President of TESOL, 2001-2002. He is currently on the Board of Trustees of the TESOL International Research Foundation, and the Board of Directors of TESOL. His interests include learning styles and strategies, reading, and research.

His publications include ACTIVE Skills for Reading, Books 1-4, Exploring Second Language Reading: Issues and Strategies, Real Contexts, and Milestones. He has also written numerous articles and presented at conferences all over the world.

Requirements:

    Internet access, e-mail, and the Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox Web browser.

Syllabus:

    All courses run for six weeks, with a two-week grace period at the end. Two lessons are released each week for the six-week duration of the course. You do not have to be present when the lesson is released, but you must complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

    A new section of each course starts on the second or third Wednesday of each month. If enrolling in a series of two or more courses, please be sure to space the start date for each course at least two months apart.
